leaking toilet ... can you help??

We have a leaky toilet, my husband replaced the flapper is not true, then replaced the tube with the string thing (sorry this is out of my element) and still leaks. Certainly this is an internal leak. Any suggestions? It plans to work on it again this weekend and I thought I would try to come up with some ideas to help you with .... Helps :-)

I'm not sure what you mean by an internal leak. If you mean to keep running water in the toilet bowl instead than on the floor then there are two places that can do that. One is at the flapper valve, and you say it has replaced. The other is through the overflow tube. If you look you'll see a pipe that rises inside the tank. This is usually part of the valve assembly filll. Normally there is a tube of fill valve that goes with it. As your toilet is filling after cleaning the fill valve makes a water jet that pipe to carry water into the container to the proper level. It should stop when the tank is full. If the fill valve is sticking and not cut the overfilling of the tank that acts as an overflow pipe so no flood the house. If the float off not doing it still works. There is a screw on top of the fill valve that controls the cup filling. There are screws adjustment to handle the float level or have a float type of rod can bend the rod a little. Sometimes, the coaches of leakage, do not float well, and not putting enough pressure on the valve. If none of this fixes it, then the valve itself can do and perform. They are usually cheaper to replace just try to find repair parts.
